Canossian Sons of Charity in Kenya

 Abbiamo in progetto di costruire una scuola primaria vicino alla chiesa di Saint Monica. Essa servirà soprattutto le famiglie della nostra parrocchia che vivono nella baraccopoli di Kware. Stiamo già cercando il costruttore per l'opera. Ci vorrà del tempo per rendere la nuova scuola operativa, ma contiamo che il prossimo anno possiamo incominciare con una classe di studenti. We have planned to build a primary school in the compound of the Saint Monica church. It will especially serve the families of our parish who live in the Kware slum. We are already looking for the builder for the work. It will take some time to get the new school up and running, but we hope that next year we can start with a class of students.

 Oggi ricorre l'anniversario di fondazione del nostro Istituto dei Figli della Carità – Canossiani. Il 23 maggio del 1831 fu ufficialmente inaugurato a Venezia l'Oratorio Canossiano nei pressi della chiesetta di Santa Lucia. Ora al suo posto c'è la stazione ferroviaria Venezia–Santa Lucia. L'Oratorio nel 1844 fu trasferito a poche centinaia di metri, in San Giobbe.  Today is the anniversary of the foundation of our Institute of the Canossian Sons of Charity. On May  23, 1831, the Canossian Oratory was officially inaugurated in Venice near the church of Santa Lucia. Now in its place it is the Venezia – Santa Lucia railway station. The Oratory in 1844 was moved to a few hundred meters, in San Giobbe.

 Assumendo la parrocchia di St. Monica, abbiamo "ereditato" la gestione della scuola annessa alla chiesa di St. Andrew, chiamata appunto Saint Andrew Primary School. In essa ci sono 10 classi: 2 per la scuola materna, e 8 per la scuola primaria. Gli alunni frequentanti sono circa 400. La scuola non ha finanziamenti governativi, come la maggior parte delle scuole qui. Chi frequenta paga una retta che si cerca di tenere contenuta perché sia accessibile alle famiglie degli studenti. By taking over the parish of St. Monica, we 'inherited' the management of the school attached to the church of St. Andrew, called Saint Andrew Primary School. In it there are 10 classes: 2 for kindergarten, and 8 for primary school. There are about 400 students attending. The school has no government funding, like most of the schools here. Those who attend pay a fee that is tried to be kept low so that it is accessible to the students' families.

 Come si può vedere in un post più sotto, la chiesa di Saint Monica è fatta di lamiere, non ha muri di mattoni e cemento. C'è un progetto per costruire una nuova chiesa parrocchiale. Comporterà un notevole sforzo economico per la comunità parrocchiale, ma abbiamo fiducia di realizzare l'opera. Nelle foto l'idea di realizzazione. As you can see in a post below, the church of Saint Monica is made of iron sheets, it has no brick and concrete walls. There is a project to build a new parish church. It will involve a considerable economic effort for the parish community, but we are confident that we will carry out the work. In the photos the idea of realization.

 La nuova casa di formazione è quasi pronta. Ospiterà gli studenti di Filosofia e Teologia. Si trova in Ongata Rongai, una località a circa 20 km a Sud-Ovest da Nairobi. Si chiamerà Saint Joseph Formation House. Un immenso grazie da parte nostra va ai benefattori che ci hanno permesso di realizzare questo progetto. The new formation house is almost ready. It will host the students of Philosophy and Theology. It is located in Ongata Rongai, a town about 20 km southwest of Nairobi. It will be called Saint Joseph Formation House. An immense thanks from us goes to the benefactors who have allowed us to carry out this project.

Cerchiamo di andare incontro alle necessità della gente del luogo. Le principali aree di intevento sono tre: (1) Sostegno ai ragazzi/e che hanno difficoltà a pagare le rette scolastiche; (2) Aiuto ad affrontare le spese mediche; (3) Sostegno alle famiglie in difficoltà economica. Con la pandemia che stiamo vivendo i problemi si sono ingigantiti e le persone che chiedono aiuto sono aumentate. Le donazioni di benefattori ci permettono di continuare in questa attività. The main areas of intervention are three: (1) Support for children who have difficulty in paying school fees; (2) Help to medical expenses; (3) Support for families in financial difficulty. With the pandemic we are experiencing, the problems have grown and the number of people asking for help has increased. Donations from benefactors allow us to continue in this activity. Questa è la chiesa di Saint Andrew della comunità cristiana del villaggio di Gataka. Anche questa comunità è entrata a far parte della parrocchia di Saint Monica ed è servita da noi, Padri Canossiani. This is the church of Saint Andrew of the Christian community of the village of Gataka. This community also became part of the parish of Saint Monica and is served by us, the Canossian Fathers.

  Il 19 maggio 2019 il Vescovo di Ngong ha ufficialmente eretto a parrocchia la comunità cristiana di Saint Monica in Ongata Rongai e l'ha affidata alla nostra cura pastorale. Già da qualche anno servivamo quella comunità, celebrando le messe domenicali, curando il catechismo, visitando gli ammalati e gli anziani, animando attività caritative, ecc.  On May 19, 2019, the Bishop of Ngong officially erected the Christian community of Saint Monica in Ongata Rongai as a parish and entrusted it to our pastoral care. For some years we have been serving that community, celebrating Sunday masses, taking care of the catechism, visiting the sick and the elderly, animating charitable activities, etc.
